It is the mission of L’Arche Tahoma Hope Farm & Gardens to offer a safe and welcoming environment that provides meaningful farm and garden work to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Working in an integrated setting with people of a variety of abilities and gifts, each farm worker, core member, assistant or volunteer is affirmed in his/her dignity, self worth and connection to all of life. To put it more simply, the goal of the farm is “Growing People Growing Plants.” Our main products are the plants and produce that are grown on the farm with the help of our core team, volunteers, groups and supporters of all kinds. We have nursery products such as potted plants, mixed hanging baskets, geraniums, herbs, berries, a variety of perennials and annuals. We also have fresh picked berries, produce and herbs for you to take home. We have gourds, pumpkins and all types of fall plant material to decorate your home as well as fresh sustainable harvested wreaths for all your holiday needs. Our crops are as diverse as the people who come onto and experience the gifts of our farm. We support all in their areas of growth and celebrate gifts no matter how small. We work through all seasons which keeps skills and gifts honed so that each participant is continually validated in what they do during their time with us. Among the opportunities on the farm, we recycle paper from our administrative offices and re-pulp it into a handmade paper product which we use to create cards, journals, ornaments and other crafts. Each core member uses their gifts to collectively create each product. We have been growing people and growing plants in Tacoma, WA for over 30 years. We participate in two farmers markets per week and also have sales on site and at various special events around the community. These opportunities not only support our folks in their daily work activities but also provide opportunities for us to announce the mission we live each and every day. We kick off our season with our Spring Fling (last Saturday in April) and wrap things up for the year with Harvest Fest (the first Saturday of October). In December we sell fresh evergreen wreaths, homemade cards and other crafts. Find us on Facebook.
Farm practices: We practice patience, compassion and tune ourselves to the gifts of the land and the people. We use organic practices but we are not certified. We believe in feeding the soil so that the soil can feed the plants. We spread manure and compost throughout our fields, hand pick and plant extra for the rabbits. As in life if you have a good solid foundation you can overcome just about any obstacle.
CSA details: Unique selection. June-October. Delivery or pickup on farm or at two farmers markets.
