Description:

The mission of Sunfield Farm & Waldorf School is to provide programs in education and sustainable land stewardship that engage the hands, awaken the mind, and nurture connections between the earth and its inhabitants. Sunfield offers educational programs for all phases of life that enliven understanding through activity, recognize connections, harmonize academics with artistic and social activity, and kindle wonder. Sunfield educators honor the individual spirit and recognize the developmental needs of each student they teach. Our biodynamic farming principles are a model of sustainable agriculture. We strive to enrich and replenish the soils, nourish a diversity of crops and animals, and work to restore ecosystems to their natural state. The fields, forest, and wetlands of Sunfield serve as a learning environment that demonstrates a healthy balance between nature and humanity and allows participants to serve as stewards of the land. The Waldorf movement is one of the fastest growing independent school movements in the world. Currently there are approximately 870 Waldorf schools worldwide, and we are excited to be part of this important movement toward more holistic education for our children. Sunfield Waldorf School currently offers classes for pre-K through grade eight. The curriculum focuses on supporting students of varied learning styles while also integrating gardening, sustainable farming, and animal husbandry daily into our kindergarten and grade-school Waldorf program. In 2005, Sunfield purchased the 81-acre property which had been placed under a conservation easement by Jefferson Land Trust. With the exception of five acres for educational facilities, the land is preserved as a working farm in perpetuity. Our conservation easement, secured in partnership with Jefferson Land Trust, protects 26 acres of forest, 8 acres of wetlands, and 42 acres of agricultural land in perpetuity. We raise a diversity of animals and organically grown crops, renew the soil with materials produced on the farm, and use cover crops and crop rotation to maintain and improve the fields. Our farm provides sustainably grown organic food to the local community through produce sales to the Port Townsend Food Co-op and Chimacum Corner Store. Small-scale sustainable agriculture is a crucial component of a healthy community, and our biodynamic farming principles are a model of sustainable agriculture. Sunfield is a dynamic, living classroom: an ideal location for offering programs in sustainable land stewardship that engage the hands, awaken the mind, and nurture connections between the earth and its inhabitants.  The fields, forest, and wetlands of Sunfield’s 81 acres serve as an invaluable community resource for Jefferson County and the surrounding area. Our community education programs offer opportunities for children, teens, and adults to come to the farm for experiences ranging from creative play in nature to education in land stewardship.

Farm practices: Sunfield is certified Organic and Biodynamic. The Biodynamic Certification requires all that organic does, and beyond. In Biodynamic Agriculture the farm brings in minimal inputs and holds the ideal of a fully self sufficient farm. Sunfield also uses the Biodynamic Preparations which are holistic approaches to land care using the methodology of homeopathic medicine. Another important element of our farming practices is working with the celestial rhythms. For most of agricultural history farmers have worked in tune with the positions of the planets, especially the moon. Sunfield's farm practices are reintegrating this lost art back into modernity.
