Peter and Jan Alden started Alden Farms in 1994. Peter had been working in the computer software business for 20 years. Jan had been working for an air quality consulting firm for 10 years. Peter came home from work one day in 1994 and announced that he wanted to quit his job and look for a farm. He found an old dairy farm with a 100 year-old Victorian house in Monroe. The first two years they grew 40 acres of organic peas for Cascadian Farm. The peas did not bring the income needed to cover the initial investment in the farm, so they decided that organic potatoes seemed more promising. Alden Farms currently grows 15 varieties of organic potatoes in the lush soil of the Skykomish River Valley using sustainable farming practices that include crop rotation for continued fertility. The crop is packed in Monroe at the Alden’s home farm. The biggest challenges in their operation are the rising costs of all inputs and handling the continually changing requirements for packaging. The price they are able to charge for their product has changed little in 15 years while the cost of fuel, packaging, labor, and all other inputs necessary to grow and sell their potatoes have risen significantly. Another concern for the farm is the development pressure on available farmland in the Seattle area. Alden Farms sells the majority of its crop through the local wholesale market, but farmers markets remain an important retail outlet providing direct contact with the end customer. Alden Farms sells its potatoes at the University Market on Saturdays and the West Seattle Market on Sundays from August through mid-April.
