Pomegranate Soda

2 large pomegranates
1 cup sugar (you can use more or less ‘to taste’)
½ cup active liquid whey (from kefir, yogurt or cheese making)
Half gallon of filtered or distilled water

With only four ingredients you can make your own delicious soda! Kids can help as a fun half-cooking, half- science project.

Separate the pomegranate seeds/fruits from the skin and membranes. Put pomegranate ‘seeds’ into a blender with some of the filtered water and pulse to dislodge the pulp from the seeds.
Strain liquid through cheese cloth and press to remove as much liquid as possible.
Add to a gallon-sized glass jar with sugar, whey and enough water to make a half gallon of liquid. Stir to let sugar dissolve.
Cover loosely with a towel and let sit at room temperature for a day or two. When it starts to look bubbly, bottle and cap tightly to carbonate.
Use glass bottles that are meant to hold pressurized liquids.
Refrigerate when fizzy and drink within a few weeks.
